Treatment for ADHD includes medication, usually a stimulant, which gives a calming effect. Education or specific training, psychotherapy or a treatment combination prove most effective. With treatment, those with ADHD can succeed in school and at work, continuing with productive lives. The same treatment plan won’t work for everybody. The majority of medications are approved for those ages 6 and older.

The medications used to treat ADHD often have side effects, such as a decrease in appetite, there are some less common side effects, such as tics or severe personality changes. If the less common side effects occur, you should consult with the medical provider in order to switch medications.
