A mental disorder that is identified by alternating periods of depression and elation, bi-polar disorder can cause changes in thinking, energy, sleep and behavior. Those suffering from the disorder have periods in which they are sad and hopeless and times when they are energized and overly happy. They can also show impulsive tendencies, experience delusions, experience hallucinations and suffer from irritability. Some people with such a disorder may become suicidal.
There are different kinds of bipolar disorder. Bipolar 1 is characterized by at least one full-blown maniac episode that lasts at least a week or of any duration if it requires hospitalization. Bipolar 2 is very severe, resulting in the patient displaying prominent euphoria, volatility, irritability and high levels of aggression and paranoia.

Cyclothymic disorder is a rare condition. It has mild mood swings, but does need treatment from a medical provider or mental health professional. Usually, an anti-depressant is prescribed and the patient needs counseling or therapy for the long-term.
