Conduct Disorder/Oppositional Defiant Disorder & Addiction
Content Overview: Conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder are mental illnesses commonly associated with substance abuse. Learn more about the signs of conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder, and how South Coast Counseling can help.
Conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder are diagnosed in children. Oppositional defiant disorder is the milder version of the two disorders and is usually diagnosed earlier than conduct disorder. Both disorders have similar symptoms, such as deliberately annoying other individuals, refusing to follow rules, disciplinary problems, difficulty with relationships, easily annoyed, emotional, seeking revenge and acting spitefully.
According to research, about half of the children who have untreated oppositional defiant disorder will continue to exhibit behavior problems. About a fourth of the original group will progress to having conduct disorder later on. While children and adolescents with either disorder may break the rules, they are known to show little to no respect for the rights of others. They may exhibit aggression toward animals and people, lie to avoid consequences and even destroy property.
