According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 9.3 percent of individuals aged 12 or older “needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol abuse problem in 2009.” That amounts to 23.5 million people. Of those recorded and admitted into publicly funded substance abuse treatment programs in 2008, 23.1 percent of abusers partook only of alcohol. 18.3 percent used alcohol along with another drug.
